Member Special Works

The St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP) is a nonprofit organization that offers a lifeline to those in want of food and clothing, rent assistance, medical aid, help with addiction, abuse, incarceration, employment and shelter. Profit from every donation goes directly to the member district council representing the area where the donation is made. Since the profits from your vehicle donation go to your community, it is useful to know what special works are being done. For a complete list of special works by member District Councils visit their websites - the highlights below are a partial list.

Donors can also direct the profits from their vehicle donation to a preferred SVDP program or location that is not listed below.

Alameda

The District Council of Alameda County distributes food and clothing and provides job training and programs for women, children and the homeless.

Free Dining Room serves 1,500 hot meals to homeless and low-income men, women and children seven days a week; also provides bag lunches to seniors and distributes meals to 17 satellite locations in Alameda County.

Visitation Center provides a daytime drop-in center for women and their children, free laundry and shower facilities, clothing, diapers, formula for infants, counseling, child abuse prevention, ESL and other resources.

Champion Guidance Center provides a daytime resource facility for homeless men who seek shower and laundry facilities, clothing, addiction help, legal assistance, housing referrals, and job training and support.

The District Council of San Mateo is focused on distributing food and clothing, providing rent and utilities assistance, and offering various programs for children of poverty, the homeless, and the incarcerated.

Homeless Help Centers provide food, clothing, temporary shelter, bus fares and laundry services; also assist with work-readiness needs and emergency medical assistance.

SVDP's Catherine Center provides a fresh beginning for women recently released from incarceration through a residential program, where residents are equipped to make healthier life choices.

Helping Children in Poverty provides children with shelter, food and clothing; helps parents with child care expenses; sponsors a Christmas gift program; provides back-to-school clothing and supplies as well as opportunities for summer camp attendance.

The District Council of Contra Costa is focused on providing job training, sponsoring Christmas gift programs for children, and distributing food, clothing and emergency assistance.

Emergency Assistance makes home visits to assess needs seven days a week; provides food, clothing and other basic needs; lends a hand and heart during a time of anguish and crisis.

Thrift Store helps the needy in Contra Costa County with free clothes and household items.

Food Locker provides poor families with bags of groceries and vouchers for local grocery stores from a central location.

The District Council of San Francisco is focused on providing food and clothing, shelter, and dependency assistance as well as aiding victims of domestic violence.

Multi-Service Center Homeless Shelter provides meals and a safe place to over 500 homeless men and women every day, with beds for 300 each night.

Riley Center for Battered Women and their Children provides a safe place to live, food, clothing and counseling for women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Ozanam Detoxification Center provides a substance abuse detoxification and recovery facility to help people who are fighting drug and alcohol addictions.
